Last April when Mattel announced having decided to create an Ava DuVernay’s Barbie there was an incredible buzz.
Why such a fuss for a doll?
Let’s put it this way, Barbie is white, with straight and blond hair, and she is not known for having any particular activity, except maybe being Ken’s wife!
Nothing to do with Ava DuVernay, the first black female filmmaker to be nominated for an Oscar, and who proudly wears her dreadlocks and her curves. She is amazing woman and such a talented director! Have you seen “Selma”?
After the shock, came the craze!
Indeed this news was very unusual! Girls, especially blacks, were finally able to play with a Barbie that looks like them. As for their mothers would no longer blame themselves for offering their children a toy considered as an opponent of their feminist battles!
By honoring Ava DuVernay, Mattel has decided to also honor the diversity of American women and give visibility to female directors, a true minority in the entertainment industry.
We were numbers of mothers, no matter our color, to think it would be a perfect gift for our children for Christmas. Too many obviously, the product was out of stock in only one hour!
Mattel has obviously filled a need. The need for young girls to be able to identify themselves to authentic characters with strong values !
By the way who said that diversity do not sell?
